Position Overview
The Associate Director of Communications and Marketing is a key member of Union Theological Seminary’s Communications and Marketing team, responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive content strategy that advances Union’s mission, supports enrollment and fundraising goals, and strengthens the institution’s public profile. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications and Marketing, the Associate Director will lead content creation for digital, print, and social media channels, with a particular focus on managing Union’s newsletter, driving social media engagement, and implementing marketing initiatives that highlight the Seminary’s distinctive voice and impact. Some travel, weeknights, and weekends to support events as necessary.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a content strategy that aligns with Union’s strategic priorities, including increasing enrollment, supporting fundraising efforts, and amplifying Union’s thought leadership in theological education and public discourse.
- Lead the editorial planning, writing, and production of Union’s e-newsletter, ensuring audience engagement, and consistent alignment with institutional messaging.
- Manage Union’s social media presence, including developing content calendars, writing and posting content, monitoring engagement, and analyzing performance to inform future strategy.
- Collaborate with academic, administrative, and development teams to produce compelling marketing materials that drive interest in Union’s programs, events, and initiatives.
- Create, edit, and proofread written, visual, and multimedia content for Union’s website, social media, and print publications.
- Ensure brand consistency and adherence to style guidelines across all content and platforms.
- Analyze data and key performance metrics across digital, social, and email channels to assess effectiveness, identify trends, and optimize future content and campaigns.
- Stay informed about best practices, trends, and innovations in content marketing, social media, and higher education communications.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Exceptional writing, and editing skills, with the ability to adapt tone and style for different audiences and channels.
- Strong understanding of content strategy, including audience segmentation, messaging frameworks, and integrated marketing approaches.
- Proficiency in managing and growing social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (Twitter), and familiarity with analytics tools such as Google Analytics and platform insights.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments, balancing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with email marketing platforms (e.g., Mailchimp, Slate, Net Community) and content management systems (e.g., WordPress).
- Creative mindset with an eye for compelling visuals and basic graphic design skills (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) a plus.
- SEO & SEM expertise, including driving Google search clicks and managing targeted paid campaigns that expanded reach and improved lead conversion.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in communications, marketing, content strategy, or a related field.
- Demonstrated experience creating high-quality content across digital, print, and social media platforms
- Proven ability to develop and execute successful marketing and engagement campaigns.
- Strong project management skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience in non-profit and/or higher education settings a plus.
