Purpose and Description
The Director of Communications is a full-time position responsible for coordinating and initiating print and electronic communication and media across all ministry areas at First Presbyterian Church Spartanburg. This position will creatively, efficiently, and effectively communicate the story of God’s work in and through the church to members, visitors, staff, and the community at-large. Through close collaboration with pastors and staff, this position will not only engage the existing congregation but also provide vision for sharing the life and mission of the congregation with a broader outside audience.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Cast vision and develop strategy for overall church-wide communications and branding. Develop and execute specific goals and strategies to create a compelling and inspiring vision in close consultation with pastors, communications coordinator, staff, and church leadership. Constantly research and solicit feedback on effective communication avenues that will allow the church to grow in its mission.
- Develop and manage the church “brand.” Ensure clear and consistent messaging across all ministry areas and communication platforms. For example, provide graphic design support for church ministries through the creation of logos, poster advertisements, tabletop materials, proactively planning/editing photo and video content production, etc., as well as consult on individual projects.
- Oversee and provide strategic leadership for all church-wide digital and printed communications. This includes the publication of a weekly Sunday worship bulletin, e-Newsletter, print publications (quarterly magazine, stewardship materials, annual reports, etc.), church website, worship livestreams, and church social media platforms.
- Ensure that a demographically diverse audience feels connected to the church. Employ different communication methods to engage individuals with varying levels of technological abilities.
- Supervise the Communications Coordinator role. Serve as the primary staff support to the Communications Committee. Work closely with the Communications Committee chairperson to prepare and plan monthly meetings as well as assist in annual budget development and expenditure oversight.
- Recruit, support, and provide oversight of volunteer AVL team. Oversee regular communication with and training of team of approximately twenty volunteers who lead livestream on Sunday mornings.
- Supervise management of all A/V equipment and capabilities on campus. Collaborate with appropriate staff to make recommendations as needed regarding regular maintenance, acquisition, or changes to all communications-related technology.
- Maintain regular office hours at the church. Participate in a weekly staff meeting normally held every Tuesday. Some flexibility in schedule is available, though the position requires occasional work on weeknights or weekends to support church events or ministry needs.
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff.
Skills and Abilities
Must bring a creative and curious mind, a strong work ethic, and a genuine desire to foster spiritual growth through clear and compelling communication – in person, in print, and online. Attention to detail and the ability to organize and express big ideas concisely are essential. A background in graphic design and creative or professional writing is preferred. Must be able to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating maturity, emotional stability, and personal integrity.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree and 2–5 years of related experience, or equivalent. Experience with website management and social media content creation required. Proficiency or willingness to learn Constant Contact, Canva, InDesign, and ProPresenter.
Relationships
This position will report directly to the Senior Pastor/Head of Staff and work closely with the full pastoral and programmatic team. This position serves as supervisor for the Communications Coordinator role.
