About the Company:
Based in San Diego, California, CovalentCreative is a technology and healthcare information company shaping the future of eyecare. Through leading brands like Eyes On Eyecare, Glance, and npiQ, we deliver innovative web applications, accredited education, and data-driven insights to tens of thousands of eyecare professionals. Our mission is to empower the people who care for vision with the tools, knowledge, and connections they need to excel.
Eyes On Eyecare®, the #1 provider of leading-edge clinical and career education for the next generation of optometrists and ophthalmologists, is seeking a detail-oriented and organized individual to join our team. Through an all-in-one digital platform, we provide editorial content, industry news, events, CE/CME, courses, clinical content, market research, and talent acquisition.
As our multimedia and video programming continues to grow, we are seeking a VP of Content to expand and grow our publishing & events department.
Position Overview:
As VP of Content, you’ll lead the content & publishing department as both a visionary leader and a modern media and editorial operator. You’ll set the strategy and standards for what we publish, and you’ll ensure our work reaches the right clinicians through the channels that matter now (and the ones that are rapidly emerging).
The VP of Content owns the full content ecosystem at Eyes On Eyecare—setting strategy and direction across our core pillars (Resources, Glance, Course, and Events) and extending that work into off-platform and emerging channels (social media, partnerships, and future content experiences).
Your job is to turn market signals into priorities, priorities into publishing systems, and publishing systems into measurable impact for the profession and the business. If you love high-quality editorial work and you’re energized by the challenge of building content engines and teams that thrive amid platform change, this role will feel like home.
Key Responsibilities:
Content Vision, Editorial Strategy, and Portfolio Leadership
- Own a proactive, long-range editorial and programming calendar across Resources, Glance, Courses, and Events—setting themes, priority windows, and the “big bets” well in advance based on market signals, internal intelligence, and audience needs
- Continually raise the bar for what “quality content” means for our brand and ensure the brand is seen as the #1 content platform in eyecare in a world of AI and saturation
- Make high-level editorial calls on what we cover (and what we don’t), with strong judgment and clear guardrails
Virtual Events Strategy & Educational Programming Ownership (CE/Credit)
- Own the events portfolio strategy (tentpole CE days + short webinars); decide what we run, evolve, reposition, or sunset based on audience demand and sponsor-market realities
- Set annual timing windows and program direction for each event (themes, learning objectives, track/session mix, OD vs MD positioning), without owning logistics or exact dates
- Select and manage program chairs and top-level faculty strategy; establish repeatable programming frameworks that ensure credibility and educational quality
- Partner with sales and sponsors to stay “ear to the ground,” align programming with commercial reality while protecting educational integrity
Audience Growth and Distribution (Search, Social, Newsletter, and Beyond)
- Continually refine our channel strategy that drives reach and loyalty across all channels (Resources, Glance, Course, and Events, plus emerging channels)
- Partner with editorial team members to ensure content is structured to perform in modern discovery (SEO basics, but also AI-driven search and answer ecosystems)
- Refine data-driven feedback loops: what’s resonating, why, with whom, and how we double down
- Develop resilience plans for shifting platform traffic—including the reality of declining traditional Google search performance in many categories
Content Products, Monetization Alignment, and Brand Integrity
- Collaborate with sales and marketing teams to create content programs that maintain high-integrity editorial independence, high-value, and feel innovative
- Guide editorial packaging for revenue-aligned initiatives (series, guides, downloads, research-driven content, video channels, event-program integrations)
- Represent editorial leadership in cross-functional decisions where commercial goals and editorial integrity must be balanced
Content Operations, Systems, and Team Enablement
- Be the key partner & contact for OD and MD Key Opinion Leaders in order to build and scale great programs with their support.
- Coordinate with Client Services and internal stakeholders on client-connected editorial work (topics, KOLs, timelines, interdepartmental communication)
- Build and maintain operating systems that make content production predictable, scalable, and high-quality while embracing AI in back-end workflows.
- Ensure workflow clarity: strategy → ideation → briefs → production → review → publish → optimize/refresh
- Run recurring ideation and planning rhythms that generate a steady backlog aligned to key themes and priorities
- Lead, coach, and develop the content leadership team; clarify ownership and decision rights across roles
Innovation, Formats, and Original Research Content
- Set direction for new and existing content format strategy (written, newsletter, video, audio, mobile app interactive, events/webinars, and new experiments)
- Oversee original research content initiatives (e.g., ECP surveys) as editorial products—topic selection, credibility standards, and publication strategy
- Champion practical AI adoption inside content workflows (augmentation, speed, repurposing, QA support) while maintaining editorial standards
Who This Role Is Not For:
This role will not be a good fit if you…
- Want a job that is primarily writing, editing, or polishing copy (this is leadership + systems + strategy, with selective hands-on moments)
- Avoid data or feel uncomfortable being accountable for growth, reach, and measurable outcomes
- Have trouble finding how to make your voice heard in a group of other department VPs and C-Suite team members
- Feel anxious or defeated by the realities of AI and content competition in eyecare
- Struggle to make decisions with imperfect information or dislike healthy debate amongst leaders
- Prefer working in silos rather than partnering closely with editorial, events, medical review, revenue, and operations
- Default to “more content” instead of “less content, but more valuable”
Required Qualifications:
- 10+ year experience leading content in a healthcare digital-first environment (publication, education media, professional media, or adjacent)
- Demonstrated ability to set content strategy and translate it into execution through teams and systems
- Strong ability to think big picture, long term, and set a 3 year, 1 year, and 6 month strategy that rolls up neatly and supports company objectives.
- Comfort with performance analysis and using analytics dashboards to guide content direction
- Proven people leadership: coaching editors/creators, setting accountability, clarifying ownership, and building culture
- Experience building independent editorial content frameworks that protect editorial integrity
- Experience launching new content formats (video/audio/webinars) and building repeatable production models
- Experience with project management software (ClickUp or similar)
- Experience with Zoom, Google Suite, and collaborative digital tools
- Strong experience with Analytics applications - Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Parse.ly, Google Looker Studio
- Accepting of AI in department workflows and embracing LLMs for efficiencies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in eyecare or medical education domains
- Familiarity with clinical review workflows, fact-checking standards, and/or CE/CME-like content environments
- Experience owning or shaping a virtual professional education/events portfolio, including speaker/chair strategy and program design
- Experience creating original research as content (surveys, field studies, reports)
- Strong fluency in how AI is changing content discovery and production (e.g., AI search, answer engines, workflow augmentation)
