The City Garden Montessori School Junior High Assistant Guide is a vital support role within the
classroom community. Under the supervision of the Lead Guides, and reporting to the School
Principal, the Junior High Assistant Guide’s role is to provide guidance and continuity for an
instructional program delivered with an anti-bias/anti-racist pedagogy.
The primary function of the Assistant Guide is to play a critical and supportive role for our Junior
High program. The Assistant Guide will work in three distinct areas: 1) Assisting and strengthening
student learning, 2) Encouraging and modeling positive relationships and choices, 3) Documenting
Learning and Behavior.
Provide Support to the Lead Classroom Guides
The Assistant Guide will be required to work in collaboration with classroom Lead Guides to assess
students’ academic needs and proficiency, assist them in setting goals, connect them to appropriate
resources, and provide ongoing support by assisting and strengthening student learning.
Academic Support
- Work with Lead Guides to facilitate small group follow up lessons in Math and Language Arts
- Facilitate In-House Service Learning Program for Junior High Students to help City Garden
Community and neighborhood
- Chaperone small group Service Learning Opportunities
- Facilitate Monthly Career Speakers
- Manage student behavior when outside the classroom (students assisting in other
classrooms, during specials, etc.)
- Communicate with parents regarding student behavior
- Work side by side with students at their tables and desks
Assist in the Maintenance of the Classroom Environment
The Assistant Guide helps the Lead Guides to prepare, maintain, and enhance the learning
environment by encouraging and modeling positive relationships and choices.
- Assists in establishing and maintaining the classroom culture, paying particular attention to
the needs of the students
Engages students within the classroom by interacting and thinking about what is happening
around them
- Prepares and maintains the classroom physical environment, keeping the classroom neat and
organized
Assist in Data Collection and Record Keeping
The Assistant Guide helps the Lead Guides by documenting learning and behavior; keeping records
of small group lesson outcomes for individual students, including behavioral data.
- Observe students in the classroom and document data
- In collaboration with Guides and students, create monthly newsletter
- Keep detailed records of Service Learning Program including outcomes and pictures of
students helping community
Related Duties
- Takes an active role in developing City Garden as an institution of learning
- Participates in weekly staff meetings, school events, and conferences
- Keeps information confidential
- Is professional and positive in all dealings with students and parents
- Participates in school functions when requested by the Principal, including but not limited to
Open Houses, Transition Nights, Curriculum Nights, Parent Orientations and the Family Field
Day
- Responsible for reading the employee handbook and adhering to the guidelines and policies
as established in the employee handbook
Requirements
- Possess a minimum of an Associate’s degree, Bachelor’s degree highly preferred
- 2+ years of working with adolescents 12 years of age and older in a classroom setting or in an
after school programs or club setting, camps, detention centers, and/or volunteer activities;
previous experience in a Junior High or High school age classroom preferred
- Knowledge and experience with Google Suite
- Ability and confidence to help students complete Middle School Math and Language Arts
work
- Have demonstrated ability to work effectively under the direction of others
- Have willingness to assume any responsibilities appropriate for the position
- Ability to adapt to the changing needs of students and the school environment
- Demonstrated commitment to equity and anti-biased/anti-racist principles
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Exemplary organizational skills
Working Conditions
Indoor school environment, with the majority of work performed in a classroom setting. Required
to be outdoors during playtimes and outdoor education time throughout the year.
Physical Demands
Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work
documents, set-up and maintain student records files. Nature of work requires an ability to operate
standard office equipment (telephone, computer, printer/copier). Have the ability to stand, bend,
reach high and low, stoop, and walk around, sit on floor for periods of time. Be capable of
physically assisting students as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, restraining, etc.), up to 40
lbs. on a daily basis.
