Job Summary: Punchbowl News is looking for an experienced Deputy Policy Editor to join our growing editorial team. Our policy beats include, finance, tax, tech and defense with a plan to expand into more areas. The best person for this job has extensive editing experience, expert knowledge of how politics shapes policy outcomes on Capitol Hill and an ability to thrive in a fast-paced, newsletter-first newsroom.
We’re looking for someone with at least three years of experience editing Capitol Hill and Washington policy coverage. In addition, the best candidate will have prior Capitol Hill reporting and newsletter experience.
The top candidate is highly skilled at editing a range of items, from spot news to enterprise pieces, and will be adept at ensuring it is delivered in our signature Punchbowl News writing and reporting style. This is a hugely important role in our newsroom and the best candidate will be well-organized, detail-oriented and self-starting with an ability to quickly and concisely produce clean copy on deadline.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Policy Editor and a team of high-energy reporters as they break news across the Capitol in key policy areas.
- Manage and coordinate daily policy coverage for our flagship newsletters
- Manage and coordinate coverage for our weekly policy newsletters.
- Work closely with our managing editor and policy editor to ensure editorial goals are being met each week
- Collaborate across the newsroom, leading editorial involvement in our events and special projects as needed
- Play a key role in shaping our long-term editorial expansion
Qualifications
- 3+ years of editing experience; 6+ years of editorial experience overall
- Strong familiarity with Punchbowl News and its reporting style: informative yet punchy, authoritative yet conversational
- Firm grasp of AP style
- Self-starter, highly organized
- Experience collaborating across newsrooms
- Ability to manage multiple editorial projects at a time
Compensation & Benefits:
The salary for this role is in the range of $130,000 - $160,000. Final compensation will be based on scope, work experience, and relevant skills.
