Associate Staff Writer, Allure
Allure is looking for an Associate Staff Writer to conceptualize and execute beauty and wellness service stories across all of our verticals. The associate writer is a true front-of-(virtual) book beauty reporter, keeping up on the latest beauty trends and product launches. This person will be regularly checking in with beauty pros (hairstylists, nail artists, derms, etc) and monitoring social media (Reddit, Instagram, TikTok, etc) for story ideas.
The Associate Staff Writer will play a central role in shaping Allure’s distinctive voice across digital platforms, producing compelling, authoritative stories that drive conversation in beauty, wellness, and culture. The successful candidate will file daily news pieces along with reported trend pieces.
This role requires not only excellent writing and reporting skills but also editorial judgment, creativity and initiative. This is a Guild position.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Write and build a mix of news, service, opinion, and trend articles per month, including both net-new and refreshed content.
- Work closely with Allure’s Content Director and Senior Editor to build a monthly content lineup (including seasonal and evergreen articles) with performance and audience engagement in mind.
- Pitch news stories daily around current pop culture moments and trends, all through the overarching lens of beauty and wellness.
- Develop and maintain relationships with hairstylists, makeup artists, dermatologists, psychologists, chemists, and other experts in the beauty, health, and wellness fields, and pitch stories based on this reporting.
- Contribute to the Melanin Edit, including at least 1 monthly story to be published under the tentpole and writing the franchise’s weekly newsletter.
- Collaborate with audience development team to find unique ways to promote the content in newsletter, social, and Google Discover to maximize performance
- Represent the Allure team at events or in PR opportunities as needed
- Appear on camera as needed for commerce UGC, social media, video, and branded content campaigns
- Additional duties as required, or as assigned by manager
Desired Skills & Qualifications:
- 2-3 years experience covering beauty
- Demonstrated expertise in researching, reporting, and writing with proven ability to turn around stories in a fast-paced environment
- Experience leveraging SEO tools, such as Keyword Finder, Clearscope, and Google Analytics, to optimize content
- Familiarity with a variety of hair care products, including shampoos, conditioners, leave-in treatments, oils, gels, creams, edge controls, and styling products.
- Ability to accurately evaluate product performance, including moisture retention, curl definition, hold, shine, frizz control, scalp comfort, and overall hair health.
- An exceptional voice that comes through in their writing
- Passion for pop culture and internet trends, with strong opinions and perspectives about current events
- Ability to contribute original ideas
- Excellent organizational skills and fantastic collaboration and communication skills
- Willingness to learn new skills, incorporate editorial feedback to improve work, and make decisions informed by data and performance

The expected base salary range for this position is from $66,500 - $72,500. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
