Position Summary
The Editorial Assistant supports the editorial team in helping to create timely, accurate and engaging content for a business-to-business insurance magazine and digital news platform. This role assists with article production, fact-checking, content management, social media promotion, newsletters and administrative tasks while helping ensure editorial quality and deadlines are met.
This is an ideal position for someone beginning a career in journalism or business publishing with an interest in insurance, financial services or regulatory news.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Support
- Assist editors with the production of daily news stories, press releases, feature articles, interviews and special reports.
- Proofread and edit articles for grammar, spelling, AP Style and consistency.
- Fact-check articles, statistics, company information and quotations.
- Research insurance industry trends, regulatory developments and market data.
- Gather background information and supporting materials for editors and reporters.
- Prepare article drafts, briefs and summaries as assigned.
- Keep a calendar of important event and coverage responsibilities.
Digital Content Management
- Upload and format stories in the content management system (CMS).
- Schedule publication of articles and maintain website content.
- Optimize articles for SEO, including headlines, keywords and metadata.
- Source and edit photos, charts and graphics when appropriate.
- Ensure links and multimedia function properly before publication.
Newsletter & Social Media
- Assist with preparing daily or weekly email newsletters.
- Create social media posts to promote editorial content across LinkedIn, X, Facebook and other platforms.
- Monitor industry news and identify story ideas or trending topics.
Administrative Duties
- Maintain editorial calendars and publication schedules.
- Coordinate interviews and communicate with sources when needed.
- Track article assignments and deadlines.
- Organize editorial files, contacts and research materials.
- Assist with special editorial projects, awards programs, webinars and events.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, English, Business or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Familiarity with AP Style.
- Ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced news environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace.
Preferred
- Internship or experience with a newspaper, magazine or digital publication.
- Experience using a content management system (WordPress preferred).
- Knowledge of SEO best practices.
- Familiarity with social media management.
