About the Role
The oldest general-interest monthly in America is hiring a Digital Manager to oversee its website, online store, newsletters, Substack, and digital strategy. Since 1850, the publication has shaped the nation's intellectual life through long-form narrative journalism, essays, and celebrated features. It operates as a 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit.
Reporting to the Marketing & Communications Director, this role manages the full digital presence for a storied publication, from preparing monthly print content for web launch to producing e-newsletters, implementing front-end website updates, and tracking performance across digital channels. The digital manager will also serve as the main point of contact for contracted developers and IT consultants, supervise a digital assistant, and co-manage seasonal digital marketing interns.
This is a five-days-a-week, in-office position in New York City.
What the Role Covers
- Overseeing and managing website design and development to ensure the web presence is current, user-friendly, and SEO-optimized
- Preparing each month's print content for launch on the publication's website
- Creating and monitoring metrics to measure the effectiveness of digital campaigns and strategies, reviewing analytical reports, and using data to improve performance
- Implementing all front-end website updates
- Producing e-newsletters
- Liaising with the fulfillment service to facilitate online subscription sales, the store, and user support
- Acting as the main point of contact for contracted developers and IT consultants on back-end updates, cybersecurity, and internal tech concerns
- Collaborating closely with editorial, marketing, development, and advertising departments
- Leading a monthly digital meeting with department heads on website health, e-newsletter performance, Substack, and traffic insights
- Staying current with digital trends and technologies and recommending new initiatives
- Directly supervising the digital assistant and co-managing digital marketing interns
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of proven experience in a digital manager or similar role
- Degree in marketing, business, or a related field
- Experience creating and executing comprehensive digital marketing strategies that deliver business results
- In-depth knowledge of PPC advertising, SEO, and social media marketing
- Strong leadership and people management skills
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions
- Proficiency in website editing tools, content management systems, email marketing platforms, and social media management tools
- Experience using WordPress
- Knowledge of accessibility standards and best practices for accessible digital content
- Experience with Google Search Console, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads, and GA4 reporting preferred
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar preferred
