Business Editor
Job Description Observer Media, New York (Open To Remote)
Observer covers the people who move markets, capital, policy and culture. Observer puts news about Power Players into context. We do not subscribe to the idea that companies and governments do things; rather, that people do. We do not cover the products they launch or the news they report, but the power they wield and how they use it. For almost four decades, we've chronicled the personalities that define media, technology and finance. We're looking for an editor who can help deepen that franchise by closely following the major trends, the people behind them and connecting the dots for an affluent, educated readership.
The Role
You'll play a key role in executing Observer's power coverage, editing and assigning stories across media, tech and finance alongside a small roster of contributing writers. You'll work with our Contributors Editor to help recruit expert voices—founders, CEOs, investors, operators—to weigh in on the forces reshaping their industries.
You'll help expand our access to the people who matter and push coverage toward the classic Observer sensibility: sharp, knowing, focused on the stage rather than the performance. You'll use your relationships and news judgment to help position Observer as a publication power players want to talk to—whether that's an exclusive with a media executive navigating a crisis, a founder's first interview post-funding, or the profile that captures a rising executive before everyone else notices.
Day-to-Day
- Track the most important news and trends in media, tech and finance and the people driving those moments
- Assign and edit articles that chronicle the pulse of power in media, tech and finance
- Help welcome new writers—some you know and trust, others you're willing to bet on—into Observer's ecosystem
- Help identify and recruit leadership voices for expert commentary, in partnership with the Contributors Editor
- Contribute to franchise development discussions (Power Lists, tentpole editorial packages, partnerships) alongside leadership
Who You Are
- You've spent 3-5+ years covering business, media or technology for a publication that people in those industries actually read
- You have relationships with executives, investors and operators and are actively building more
- You've broken news, written strong profiles and contributed to coverage that got noticed inside the industries you cover
- You understand how power is built and exercised, who has it and who wants it
- You're excited to think strategically about what Observer's business coverage can become
- You understand the difference between chronicling power, celebrating power and holding power to account
- You can find the power player angle in every major business story
- You have a practical sense of how to use A.I. usefully in a newsroom workflow and can spot when it's been leaned on in the wrong way
Why Observer
Observer is independently owned, editorially ambitious and focused on a specific lane: power and influence across business, culture and society. You won't produce daily aggregation or chase traffic. You'll have real freedom to pursue the stories that matter, work with writers who can execute at a high level and help shape coverage that reflects our editorial vision. If you're a rising editor or senior reporter ready to take on more ownership—and you have the relationships, news judgment and editorial curiosity to grow into making Observer essential reading for the people who run media, tech and finance—we'd love to hear from you.
