New York, NY (Hybrid: 3 Days In-Office) | Full-Time | $100,000 - $125,000/yr
About the Role
A leading New York City think tank focused on creating a stronger and more equitable economy is hiring a Managing Editor with exceptional editing and writing skills. The organization publishes fact-based policy research that raises awareness of important, often overlooked issues and advances practical solutions to expand economic opportunity. A hallmark of its work is making complex policy research clear and accessible to policymakers, journalists, nonprofit leaders, and other New Yorkers.
This is not primarily a copy-editing role. The Managing Editor provides substantive and developmental editing throughout the research and writing process, often getting deeply into text: reorganizing sections, rewriting passages, sharpening arguments, and finding better ways to deploy data, interviews, and evidence. The role also involves significant original writing, including report sections, policy briefs, proposals, op-eds, and funder communications. The position reports to the Editorial & Policy Director and also works directly with the Executive Director.
What the Role Covers
- Leading the editing and project management of a portfolio of research projects while collaborating on others
- Editing publications across formats including long-form policy reports, data briefs, commentaries, op-eds, newsletters, proposals, and funder communications
- Writing and developing original content from report sections and introductions to policy briefs, proposals, speeches, and organizational writing
- Supervising and mentoring members of the research team, helping staff strengthen writing, research, and project management skills
- Helping shape projects from the outset, including framing research questions, identifying sources, developing methodology, and determining findings and recommendations
- Establishing clear deadlines and managing research, writing, revision, and production schedules
- Conducting final quality assurance for factual accuracy, clarity, structure, consistency, and style
Qualifications
- Meaningful professional editing experience, including substantive or developmental editing of long-form content

- Intellectual curiosity and genuine interest in the issues shaping New York City
Experience managing or mentoring writers/researchers strongly preferred. Policy expertise helpful but not required. Applications welcome from both experienced and rising editors ready for more responsibility.
