About the position
Navira Federal, LLC is a small business federal contractor. We are recruiting a Writer and Author (Print Journalism) for a proposed contract supporting the Hospital Communications Department at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. You will find and tell the medical center's stories of clinical advances, research, patient journeys and staff achievements, from pitch to publication.
What you will do
- Plan and manage an editorial calendar for print and long-form digital publications, leading feature stories from pitch and research through interviews, writing, layout and publication.
- Identify story ideas on clinical advances, research, patient success stories and staff achievements.
- Conduct thorough, sensitive interviews with medical staff, patients, families and subject matter experts.
- Write, rewrite and edit copy in AP Style for news releases, feature stories and special publications.
- Work with photographers, videographers and graphic designers on multimedia story packages.
- Support public affairs work, including media queries, press interviews, website and social media updates, and weekly communication reports.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English or a related field.
- 5 or more years of journalism or professional writing experience, with a portfolio of published articles that shows interviewing, narrative storytelling and long-form writing.
- Experience in healthcare communications, military public affairs, or a similar regulated, high-visibility environment.
- Thorough understanding of HIPAA and how to safeguard protected health information (PHI), especially when interviewing patients.
- Project management skills, including managing an editorial calendar, developing content strategy and handling several stories at once.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with interview subjects, including patients, families, senior leaders and medical experts.
Work location and schedule
On site, full time, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, 8901 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD 20889. Monday through Friday during normal business hours (about 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), except federal holidays. Occasional support outside normal hours may be needed for events or emergencies. This position is not remote or hybrid.
Pay and benefits
Pay range: $95,000 to $125,000 per year. The salary offered within this range will depend on factors such as experience, skills and qualifications for the role.

Conditions of employment
- This position depends on Navira Federal receiving the Government contract that funds it. The contract is expected to start December 1, 2026.
- After a conditional offer of employment, you will need to: complete a Government background investigation (SF 85 or SF 86) for a position designated Tier II, non-critical sensitive, and receive a favorable determination; obtain a Common Access Card (CAC); sign a Defense Health Agency nondisclosure agreement (DHA Form 49); and complete required security awareness and HIPAA training.
- Before your start date, you will need to provide proof of the immunizations and TB screening the medical center requires for contractor staff (for example, TB testing and risk assessment, MMR, Tdap, influenza and hepatitis B).
- Security clearance: you do not need a clearance to apply, and an active Secret clearance is a plus. The Government may require Secret clearance eligibility for these positions. If it does, we will tell you before any offer.
