ABOUT AED
Abortion, Every Day is the country’s most influential media platform dedicated to explaining and advancing abortion rights. Founded by Jessica Valenti as a daily newsletter, the company has expanded to publish reporting and analysis across more than a half dozen platforms that are viewed more than 10 million times each month. AED’s journalism is closely read by the care providers, lawyers, activists, journalists, and policymakers who shape abortion rights in the United States. Its work has an impact on the way establishment media covers the issue and has led to legislation being introduced, amended, and vetoed. It also educates millions with videos published across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms.
THE ROLE
AED is looking for an organized, collaborative, and conscientious Managing Editor to guide its daily coverage and manage planning and execution on partnerships and special projects.
This is an opportunity for an experienced editorial leader to join a small team having a big impact. You will get to build the editorial systems that allow us to plan and collaborate. You will assign, edit, and publish urgent daily news coverage, deep investigative reporting and policy analysis, and culture-shaping opinion journalism. You will shape and manage strategic partnerships. And you will work with Valenti and AED’s CEO to build the culture of empathetic collaboration and ambitious experimentation that will allow us to thrive and grow.
What You’ll Do
- Lead newsletter editorial planning and publishing, including running regular team meetings, partnering with Valenti on daily priorities for the team, assigning and editing stories, and maintaining the AED editorial calendar to keep work on-schedule.
- Work hands-on with writers – including Valenti, AED reporters, and outside contributors and partners – to sharpen their writing and thinking and ensure every piece is fair, accurate, and rigorously sourced.
- Collaborate with AED’s community team to ensure that everything we publish across platforms is engaging, responsive to the needs of readers or viewers and aligned with the standards of the newsletter.
- Represent AED with outside partners in the development and execution of special projects and collaborations. These are likely to include: co-reported investigative work, policy research, strategic publishing, and live events.
- Foster our joyful, collaborative work culture by setting an example and coaching your team so that we can all do our best work, learn through experimentation and failure, share credit freely, and maintain a sustainable long-term commitment.
What You’ll Bring
- An obsessive curiosity about and commitment to reproductive rights and health. You may not be an expert now, but you’re excited to become one.
- A track record of successfully building and operating editorial planning systems that bring structure to teams juggling multiple projects and timelines, but allow for changes in response to daily needs.
- A fluency with modern digital publishing – from newsletters to TikToks – and an interest in continuing to learn as audiences and technologies change.
- A commitment to and deep understanding of the need to elevate marginalized voices, both in our work and at our workplace. You see this as both a journalistic and personal ethical imperative, and have delivered on it in your work and on your teams.
- At least five years as a newsroom manager or equivalent experience, preferably editing and supporting reporters balancing daily coverage with long-term projects.
- At least three years working with high-stakes investigative reporting or equivalent experience that includes handling sensitive confidential material, working closely with legal review and outside fact-checkers, and empathetically working with potentially vulnerable sources.
Compensation and Logistics
- The salary range is $120,000 to $160,000, with final salary commensurate with experience.
- Benefits include, but are not limited to, health, dental, and vision insurance, flexible paid time off, and family and medical leave.
- Because we are a small team establishing our culture and systems, we have a strong preference for a Managing Editor able to work from an office in New York City for at least 3 days per week. Remote candidates will only be considered if they are willing and able to travel regularly to work with the team.
- The role reports to Valenti, but will also work closely with AED’s CEO.
HOW TO APPLY
To apply for the role, please send a cover letter and materials to join@abortioneveryday.com. Please use “Managing Editor” as your email subject line.
In your cover letter, please explain three examples of your past work (with any needed clips attached). Tell us about:
- An experience editing an important piece and the impact your contribution had on it,
- An experience implementing or leading an editorial system and what you learned from it,
- A past team you’ve been on that had a joyful and collaborative culture and what you believe made that possible.
We will only be able to consider candidates who provide an example and materials for each.
Applications received by November 22nd will receive full consideration. We will let applicants know by November 30th if they have been selected for follow-up screening interviews. Depending on the volume of applications, we may not be able to get back to every applicant.
