Overview
The Emerging Technology Advisor continually assesses the broader technology ecosystem to stay abreast of technology developments that may intersect with Chevron’s current or anticipated businesses in an accelerative or disruptive way. Engaging with a multitude of ecosystem participants and information sources, the Emerging Technology Advisor develops perspectives, technology points of view (POVs), and strategies for potential integration, providing updates to management on a regular basis. Additionally, the POVs and strategies are used to inform business strategy, venture investments, and the formation and utilization of strategic relationships. This role is visionary and forward thinking, integrating diverse perspectives in a meaningful way to anticipate technology trends well beyond a 5-year time horizon.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
- Provides technology points of view (POVs) and strategic forecasts on emerging lower carbon (LC), new energy, or other disruptive technologies in the Emerging Technology space.
- Gathers information and perspectives on technology trends and developments via subscription services (e.g., Lux Research, Bloomberg, Darcy) and information search tools.
- Regularly engages with the external technology ecosystem (conferences, workshops, thought leaders, consultants, universities, national labs, etc.) for insights and competitive intelligence in support of technology POVs and strategies.
- Advises broadly on matters involving emerging technology trends to better align across internal Innovation teams and efforts (e.g., Venture Capital, Tech. Commercialization, Strategic Relationships).
- Works with Corp Strategy on signposting of emerging technologies having the potential to disrupt market forecasts.
- Supports the Emerging Technologies R&D program by providing strategic direction, technology signposting, roadmapping, and internalization of project results.
- Works with internal stakeholders across the enterprise to advance internal assessments and potential adoption of relevant emerging technologies.
- Coordinates with the Corp Strategy team on prioritization and reporting requirements associated with Emerging Technology R&D projects.
- Authors thought pieces on emerging technologies for internal audiences.
- Supports publication of The Monitor, an internal monthly Innovation newsletter focused on the emerging energy landscape.
- Domestic travel up to 30 days per year.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering.
- Advanced degree in business, science, or engineering.
- Broad understanding of the current oil and gas industry (minimum 5 years of experience) and a general knowledge of the new energy space and disruptive technologies.
- Experience with research and development (R&D) in both academic and industrial settings, and an understanding of how this R&D is effectively integrated with broader innovation efforts.
- Familiarity with techno-economic assessment, technology landscaping, and technology forecasting and roadmapping.
- Understanding of technology transfer and commercialization.
- Experience with the management of R&D projects.
- A demonstrated ability to quickly understand and internalize new technologies and to operate in diverse and unfamiliar technical domains.
- An ability to integrate information from a multitude of sources in order to synthesize perspectives that are meaningful to a broad oil and gas industry audience.
- A demonstrated ability to translate technical solutions to measurable business value and inform business decisions.
- An aptitude for good cross-functional communication, displaying technical competence, being proactive, and delivering results.
- Ability to put together convincing, coherent presentations to instruct, advise, and/or inform at all levels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Interface effectively with others across the broader Innovation team, across functions, and with organizations and business units spanning the entirety of Chevron’s operations.
- Regularly engage with R&D program and delivery managers to evolve enterprise technology strategy.
- Self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment.
- Proven ability to handle multiple activities simultaneously.
- Identify potential opportunities & work them to completion.
- Balance day-to-day support issues with longer term projects.
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in science or engineering.
- 10+ years Oil & Gas industry experience
- Demonstrated proficiency with techno-economic assessment, technology landscaping, and technology forecasting and roadmapping.
- Experience with technology transfer and commercialization.
- A demonstrated ability to integrate information from a multitude of sources in order to synthesize perspectives that are meaningful to a broad oil and gas industry audience.
