DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Development is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all ScrapsKC’s fundraising including the annual fund, major gifts, special events, and future capital campaigns. The Director of Development will design and execute a comprehensive development strategy designed to increase individual, foundation, and corporate revenue streams by identifying, engaging, and soliciting new prospects as well as stewarding current donors. The Director of Development will be working closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Directors in all development and fundraising endeavors.
This full-time position reports to the Executive Director and collaborates with other staff, particularly the Director of Community Engagement.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Fundraising Strategy & Implementation
• Work with the Executive Director to set annual fundraising goals and to develop and execute a comprehensive development plan with specific, measurable goals, with an emphasis on growing annual giving, major gifts ($2,500 and above), and community support.
• Conduct ongoing donor segment research and prospect evaluation.
• Oversee all annual appeals and direct mail campaigns, in collaboration with the Director of Community Engagement.
• Work with the Director of Community Engagement and Volunteer Coordinator to grow relationships with corporate and community partners into multiple domains, including financial and materials donations as well as volunteering.
• Research and write foundation and community grants. Coordinate grant reporting. Engage with the Executive Director in the development, management, and implementation of grants from the community.
• Work with the Director of Community Engagement on communications mailings and to develop collateral materials for special events, fundraising and outreach efforts.
Donor Relations & Stewardship
• Develop and manage an ongoing stewardship program to increase the organization’s major donors, including cultivating, soliciting, stewarding and recognizing current and prospective donors (individual, corporate and foundation). Ensure that donor recognition is adequate on all levels.
• Contribute content for the monthly newsletter and annual report for donors, supporters and other friends of ScrapsKC.
• Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization as needed, and articulate our mission to external constituents, partner organizations, and potential funders.
• Take advantage of parallel opportunities that arise in the fundraising process to obtain in-kind donations and volunteer services relevant to the organization’s mission.
Data Management & Gift Acknowledgement
• Build a robust donor database; develop and maintain key long-term relationships with donors and prospects.
• Oversee maintenance of the donor database, implement processes for tracking and acknowledging financial contributions and coordination of donor communications and solicitations.
• Monitor and analyze fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed.
• Provide comprehensive reports on development projects to the Executive Director, the board, and community stakeholders.
Other
• Provide administrative support including answering telephones and receiving donations.
• Participate periodically in weekday and Saturday Shopping Days for the Teacher Free Store, to stay current with trends and business operations.
• Attend ScrapsKC events as needed. May occur outside of normal working hours.
• Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
A Bachelor’s degree, along with a minimum of 6-8 years of community engagement and fundraising work experience are required. The ideal candidate:

• Is experienced in carrying out a donor-centered fundraising philosophy.
• Has impeccable follow-through and strong attention to detail.
• Is self-motivated and able to complete assignments independently, professionally and in a timely manner.
• Is polished and has compelling oral and written skills including a proven comfort level with public speaking and presentation development.
• Multi-tasks with ease amidst changing priorities.
• Is skilled at time management for productivity.
• Works independently and as part of a team.
• Has a demonstrated ability to manage and lead a team to achieve defined objectives and goals.
• Is comfortable with technology, including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications, and experienced with fundraising databases (or equivalent applications).
• Has reliable transportation to and from work.
• Is physically able to lift up to 50 lbs.
• Successfully completes a required criminal background check and drug test.
