Reporting to the Associate Vice President External Communications, the Director Marketing is responsible for the organization’s marketing and branding efforts. This role leads the organizations brand and design work, the production of direct marketing and merchandise materials, owns our website and email channels, and supports advertising and campaigns. This role creates communication strategies for specific constituent audiences such as donor segments, the general public, and current and potential clients. They will also research new content ideas and mediums, help identify how content in new mediums could fit into Safe Horizon’s overall content strategy and how we could use these new mediums. They will ensure all content reflects our commitments to client centered practice and ending systemic racism.
The Director Marketing is a key part of a cohesive system for sharing information between Program team, Development, and Communications. They will work collaboratively across teams to lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of content that draws in new audiences and engages current and potential supporters and clients of Safe Horizon. In particular, the Director Marketing works closely with the Senior Director of PR, Content Writer, and Social Media Manager to ensure consistent content and messaging across all channels for the broader organization. They collaborate with the Content Writer and the Development team to execute on an editorial calendar and strategic content campaign needs with the goal of reaching new audiences and donors.
The Director Marketing must possess a strong grasp of design principles, the ability to work within Canva to create or edit materials in branded templates, excellent project management skills, and be a skilled and authentic relationship manager.
Responsibilities:
Brand, design, and production of materials
- Lead the creative direction and be the steward of brand fidelity for Safe Horizon staff, agencies, and freelancers
- Manage external graphic designers and merchandise vendors
- Use a pre-created Safe Horizon Canva brand hub to make and edit marketing materials
- Serve as an organizational point of contact for brand related questions, along with the AVP of external communications
- Lead the design and printing of all organization materials, such as:
- annual reports and impact reports
- program and organizational marketing materials
- event materials (i.e. invitations, event branding and signage)
- Manage the branded merchandise options, materials, and requests
- Lead all direct mail processes for the development and communications team. This includes
- Managing the process, design and print of a quarterly print newsletter, EOY fundraising materials, major donor and renewal letters, and provide support for acquisition mailing needs
- Ensure all print and merchandise content aligns with brand guidelines and is reviewed with a client-centered, anti-racist lens
Digital marketing: owned and paid
- Lead all work for our owned digital channels of website and email marketing and ensure website and email donor-facing content aligns with brand guidelines and is reviewed with a client-centered, anti-racist lens
- Email
- Direct the creation and deployment of audience appropriate and engaging email communications for specific segments such as first-time donors, new online community members, major donors, mid-level donors, monthly donors and other segments.
- Load, proof, and test all emails for all segments.
- Work closely with the AVP of External Communications, Sr Director of Direct Marketing and Dev. Operations and other Development Department Unit Leaders to ensure needs are being met through our email channels
- Make data-informed recommendations to all unit directors in the Development and Communications departments to help refine and improve email content and strategy
- Website
- Responsible for website content updates
- Manage our external website maintenance vendor and work in collaboration to optimize multiple web properties, including microsites for campaigns and various needs. Proactively resolve technical issues
- Strategize and support the creation of all current and new website content including pages/posts for Search-Engine Optimization (SEO), lead generation campaigns, survivor-facing content, and program-specific/survivor-oriented content
- Manage the content creation on our advocacy action sub-site
- Manage our Google grant advertising account and content, working closely with an external consultant for optimization
- Work closely with the AVP of external communications and in collaboration with an external partner to play an active role in determining priorities for all other paid digital marketing efforts.
- Partner with fundraising and events productions teams, creating opportunities to engage with donors through multiple touchpoints, e.g., livestream, webinars etc.
Campaign and advertising
- Support the creative development of awareness and branding campaign strategies
- Work closely with the Chief Development and Communications Officer and the AVP of External Communications to concept and design branded advertising campaigns, including OOH advertising, and with the Content Writer to develop content needs for campaigns
- Execute the content strategy for branding and awareness campaigns across owned and paid media, in line with content campaign and team creation strategy
- Support the Senior Director of PR with materials to reach and engage media around campaigns
- Create all lead generation campaign content including technical backend needs such as forms, automated email series, landing pages, thank you pages, etc.
- Actively participate in advertising campaign brainstorms and execute
- Support aspects of pre- and post-video production
- Handle administrative materials and needs for video production including statement of work, creative usage rights agreements, and justification memos.
- Script writing and storyboarding support
- On site support for filming days
- Work closely with the AVP of External Communications to reach out to and schedule time with clients for photoshoot and campaign needs
- Support the Senior Director of PR with sourcing of client stories by communicating strategic campaign and press needs across the organization.
- Ad-hoc support of advocacy campaigns (attending press conferences, support sign making within brand guidelines, etc)
Qualifications:
- 5+ years in a brand, marketing, or digital marketing role, preferably with a fundraising component.
- Experience with graphic design and Canva.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
Physical demands: This position has certain physical demand requirements, which include, but may not be limited to, remaining in a stationary position for long hours and navigating citywide travel via public transit
