This is a non-Civil Service position. The Metropolitan Council Office is seeking a
Public Information Officer (PIO) to lead communications that keep residents informed about Council initiatives, legislative activity, and community engagement. This position develops public-facing materials, manages digital communications platforms, coordinates media relations, and supports outreach efforts that promote transparency and public understanding of the work of the Metropolitan Council.
The ideal candidate is a strong communicator and creative thinker with exceptional writing and organizational skills who can translate complex legislative matters into clear, accessible information for the public while supporting a fast-paced legislative environment.

In This Role, You Will
- Work at the center of local government and support communications for Nashville’s legislative body.
- Help translate complex public policy into clear, accessible information for the community.
- Collaborate with Council leadership, staff, and media partners to strengthen civic engagement.
- Contribute to meaningful work that builds transparency, clarity, and efficiency in local government.
- Lead strategic communications that keep the public informed about Metropolitan Council initiatives, legislative activity, and community engagement.
- Create clear, engaging public communications including press releases, media advisories, standard newsletter content, social media content, and other informational materials as needed.
- Manage the Council Office’s digital presence by coordinating website updates and maintaining professional, informative social media channels.
- Serve as a key liaison with local media by coordinating interviews, responding to inquiries, and identifying opportunities to highlight Council initiatives.
- Support public engagement by preparing communication materials for Council meetings, community events, and outreach initiatives.
- Provide communications support for Council leadership.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in public information, communications, journalism, public relations, or media relations.
- Demonstrated experience producing public-facing written content and managing official social media or digital platforms.
- Experience coordinating interviews, media interactions, or public outreach efforts.
- Demonstrated proficiency with office software and digital content creation tools.
- Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools.
- Demonstrated organizational and project management skills.

- Experience in a legislative, governmental, or public-sector environment.
- Familiarity with municipal governance, public meetings, and constituent engagement practices.
- Experience preparing topic recommendations for media interviews or public briefings.
- Knowledge of graphic design principles.
- Ability to capture, edit, and produce professional-quality photographs for communications use.
- Experience updating websites or collaborating with IT or web administration teams.
