The Department
The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks, Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course.
The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages.
The Position
Under general supervision, Recreation Leader IV performs specialized media and communications support for recreation and community-based programs. Will be expected to assist with city-wide special events, City Council meetings, and City Commission meetings.
City Hall is open Monday through Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM. The schedule for this position will be any combination of days between Monday through Sunday, beginning at 7:00 AM - 10:00 PM (schedule may change based on the needs of the department). This position may also be required to work non-traditional shift/hours including Friday through Sunday, nights, early mornings, holidays, special events and various evening and weekend dates.
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Draft, edit, and review articles for the City’s monthly newsletter (The Profile), ensuring accuracy and consistent tone.
- Assist with developing high-impact visual content for City publications, electronic media, and digital social media platforms.
- Create and curate content specifically for City social media platforms while keeping current with social media trends and best practices.
- Familiarity with Iphone and or Android products/equipment, and basic knowledge of professional grade video and still cameras.
- Assist with video production or photography projects from pre-production to post-production.
- Utilize Adobe Create Cloud (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Canva to produce professional-grade assets.
- Upload video products to the City’s cable channel, social media and YouTube.
- Monitor social media engagement and recommend improvements to increase community reach.
- Follows oral and written instructions such as supervisor’s work orders and equipment operation manuals.
- Regular and reliable attendance during scheduled work hours including nights, holidays, and weekends as necessary.
- Transforms ideas and concepts into finished projects and campaigns in collaboration with team and supervisor.
- Completes special projects as assigned.
- Maintains positive professional working relationships with all staff levels, other jurisdictions and outside agencies, and the general public.
- Must strive to promote a cooperative atmosphere in the department and exhibit a positive attitude.
- Performs essential duties and responsibilities under the working conditions and physical demands described herein.
- Effective and respectful communication and interactions with other employees, supervisors, individuals from other organizations, and citizen customers.
- Performs other related functions as apparent or delegated.
Additionally, candidates:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be available to work varied shifts; including evenings, early mornings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
- Ability to speak Spanish is highly desired.
Education:
- Applicants must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
- College-level coursework in Communications, Graphic Design, Film, or Marketing is highly preferred.
Experience:
- A minimum of three (3) years of cumulative work experience, with at least two (2) years of experience in recreation, government, media support or a closely related field preferred.
Physical, Mental And Environmental Working Conditions
The position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more is also required. Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and/or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors. Will also be working in outdoor area and may be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather conditions.
- License: Possession of a California Class C Driver’s License and acceptable driving record is required.
- Within 30 days of hire, candidates must obtain and maintain throughout the course of employment, certification in Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Community First Aid and Safety from a nationally accredited organization, such as the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Red Cross (ARC) and the Health and Safety Institute (HSI). (Online certifications will be accepted; skills test / hands-on training must be completed after online portion).
A Veteran's Credit of 10 points may be applied once a candidate has qualified for the eligibility list. Applicants must submit proof of service/honorable discharge in accordance with the City of Pico Rivera's Rules and Regulations along with application materials prior to the filing date. Proof must be submitted with the application materials to be eligible for veteran's credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).
