Anticipated Hiring Range: $7,610 - $8,350/month; $91,320 - $100,200/year
Full Salary Range: $7,610 - $12,177/month; $91,320 - $146,124/year

About the Work Unit
- The mission of the Office of School Safety (OSS/Office) is to assist educators, students, parents, emergency responders, and community organizations to create safe and positive school environments for all Colorado students in prek-12 and higher education schools.
- The OSS assists schools in preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from all types of emergencies and crisis situations.
- The OSS comprises three units: The Colorado School Safety Resource Center (CSSRC/Center), the Grants Unit and the Crisis Response Unit.
- The Center provides resources, training, and technical assistance to foster safe, positive, and successful learning environments where early intervention occurs to prevent crisis situations. This includes, but is not limited to a resource website, providing regional conferences and training in school safety issues, and contributions to the OSS newsletter. The Office works with an advisory board, including various representatives such as the Department of Education, the Department of Public Health and Environment, the Department of Behavioral Health, and law enforcement agencies.
- The Grants Unit manages state grants provided by the Colorado General Assembly and assists schools in finding additional grants.
- The Crisis Response Unit trains school professionals in crisis response and is available, on a limited basis, to respond to critical incidents in schools when requested.
- The mission of the Colorado School Safety Resource Center (CSSRC) is to assist educators, students, parents, emergency responders, and community organizations to create safe and positive school environments for all Colorado students in prek-12 and higher education schools.

About The Job
This position exists to efficiently and effectively manage all activities of the Center, to supervise staff members (including professional and administrative as assigned), and to supervise and direct activities, programs, and policy development in the area of school safety. The position carries out management responsibilities such as budget decisions, personnel actions, setting work unit goals and priorities, and other required responsibilities of management. This position identifies school safety strategies and communicates these strategies statewide. This position provides leadership, direction, and accountability to the Center and collaborates with educators, parents, students, emergency responders and community organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Supervision
- Supervises CSSRC staff.
- Evaluates need for appropriate staffing levels and works with HR on specific recruitments to obtain the best possible individual for the position and team. Recruits, interviews, and hires Center staff.
- Works with CDPS management to define roles; trains and guides staff regarding professional standards and office objectives and goals; delegates responsibilities; monitors and evaluates performance; initiates corrective action if needed; reviews and approves work products; identifies and secures resources needed for completion of tasks; identifies and helps to resolve staff conflicts and problems.
- Collaborates with staff in constructing their individualized performance management plans. Seeks to understand their professional goals and provides mechanisms for them and assists in finding opportunities to serve in those areas.
- Directs, supports and monitors each staff member's assignments to ensure accurate and timely completion.
- Provides an environment where staff feel valued. Identifies and learns the differences of individual staff on how they best conduct their work, receive praise, communication needs, and continue to learn new knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Promotes a continuous learning environment. Provides ample opportunity for staff to obtain necessary training so they can effectively serve CDPS in their work.
- Approves time and leave requests and bank card reconciliations.
Operational Oversight
- Collects, maintains, and disseminates information regarding current and effective school safety practices; collaborates with school districts, law enforcement agencies, fire safety, emergency managers, treatment providers, and other public and private agencies; collaborates and coordinates multi-agency projects related to effective practices to promote physical and psychological safety in schools. Initiates, leads and directs resources toward a positive statewide outcome.
- Oversees Center operations.
- Prepares and maintains records and reports, such as budgets, personnel records, or training manuals.
- Establishes and maintains relationships with other agencies and organizations to meet community needs and to ensure that services are not duplicated.
- Implements and evaluates staff, volunteer, or community training programs.
- Acts as a consultant to agency staff and other community programs regarding the interpretation of program-related federal, state, and county regulations and policies.
- Speaks to community groups to explain and interpret agency purposes, programs, and policies.
- Analyzes proposed legislation, regulations, or rule changes to determine how agency services could be impacted.
- Plans and administers budgets for programs, equipment, and support services.
- Represents organizations in relations with governmental and media institutions.
- Applies for and manages federal grants that enhance school safety opportunities for Colorado schools.
Strategic Direction
- Formulates program direction for the Center. Identifies strengths, problems, and gaps in school safety strategies and analyzes school needs’ assessments, Colorado statutes, and department philosophy in order to develop goals, objectives and training direction.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of strategies and resources to address safety concerns; coordinates the development and implementation of templates and other resources for safety and preparedness plans; communicates strategies and resources to schools statewide; and coordinates the promotion of prevention and intervention efforts to ensure safe and secure learning environments.
- Consults and collaborates with the Office of School Safety Director to establish Center priorities, coordinates programs and solves operational problems. Ensures accuracy and timeliness of the Center's web pages.
- Prepares decision item requests, audit responses, and other responses to requests from the Governor's Office, General Assembly and other agencies. Represents the Center's position/services to other departments, legislators and the general public.

Proven Experience, Knowledge, Skills
Eight years of progressively responsible professional school safety or school administration experience
OR Education And Experience, Knowledge, Skills
Four years of progressively responsible professional school safety or school administration experience AND a Bachelor's Degree or higher in Mental Health, Education or a closely related field. Transcripts must be attached at the time of application.
OR
Two years of progressively responsible professional school safety or school administration experience AND a Master's Degree or higher in Mental Health, Education or a closely related field. Transcripts must be attached at the time of application.
OR
A Doctorate degree in Mental Health, Education or a closely related field. Transcripts must be attached at the time of application.
