Madison Magazine
Overview: The associate editor will provide dynamic support across magazine products, including print, web, newsletters and social media. This role works closely with the head editor and digital editor to produce original content, support audience development and translate print content to digital channels.
- Print
- Writes print department pages as needed
- Contributes to print issue production and editing duties
- Oversees editorial process for 4-5 print/feature stories annually
- Writes 2-3 cover/feature stories annually
- Compiles and tracks story ideas for print
- Contributes to special editorial projects, including BOM, BOB, and City Guide
- Website/Web-Exclusive Content
- Translates all print content to madisonmagazine.com
- Writes 3+ web stories per month
- Reviews a share of web-exclusive stories written by interns and other staff
- Compiles monthly website stats and keeps up to date on web trends.
- Social Media
- Writes and creates 5-10 original content pieces for Instagram each month (grid posts, stories, Reels)
- Translates all web and print content to social media channels
- Tracks newsletter audience metrics and summarizes analytics monthly
- Newsletters
- Curates and writes weekly In the 608 newsletter
- Tracks newsletter metrics and summarizes analytics monthly
- Misc
- Assists with all-hands-on deck situations at the magazine, including events, Best of Madison and other promotions
- Researches and recruits potential freelance writer talent
Qualifications - Education and Experience
- Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a journalism-related field, preferably in print or digital magazine journalism
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communication arts or related field
- Skills
- Ability to balance several projects at one time and effectively meet multiple deadlines a month
- Strong critical thinking skills and professional approach to communication with coworkers and outside sources/stakeholders, including confidence in making cold calls
- Experience with pitching stories, interviewing sources and reporting with strong news judgement
- Strong writing skills with experience in both creative voice reporting and hard news writing
- Experience editing written work for voice, structure and clarity in a professional setting
- Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with writing and curating email newslettersExperience writing longform print or digital magazine stories
- Basic photography skills and proficiency with image editing in PhotoShop or other photo editing software
