Tired of Marketing by Committee? Bring Big Marketing Energy to a Mission That Matters.
At Colorado 811, marketing has a purpose beyond clicks, impressions, and quarterly shareholder expectations. We are a 40-year-old Colorado nonprofit advancing safe excavation, damage prevention, education, service, technology, and statewide public safety. Every campaign, brand decision, event, email, dashboard, story, and stakeholder touchpoint can help protect people, property, communities, and Colorado’s underground utility infrastructure. We are looking for a seasoned, technology-forward Director of Marketing and Communications who wants to build, modernize, measure, create, and lead with impact in a collaborative nonprofit environment where strong ideas can move—and not die quietly in an approval chain. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role leads a lean but commanding marketing team and offers direct access to leadership, fewer layers between strategy and execution, and meaningful room to shape Colorado 811’s brand, voice, systems, campaigns, content operations, measurement discipline, statewide reach, and long-term organizational impact.
A Player-Coach Role for a Builder, Strategist, and Marketing Operator
This is not a “delegate and disappear” role. It is a true player-coach opportunity for a senior marketing leader who can set strategy, coach a team, understand technology, direct vendors, shape executive-level decisions, and still step into high-priority work where senior judgment, strong writing, creative direction, campaign insight, technology-forward thinking, and hands-on marketing expertise matter most. If you love strategy but still know your way around a subject line, content creation, dashboard, and deadline, you understand the assignment. One day you may be sharpening brand positioning with the Executive Director; the next, reviewing campaign performance, refining critical copy, guiding a HubSpot workflow, evaluating and using AI-enabled content tools, planning an event launch, or turning audience data into a smarter campaign. You will not personally own every deliverable, but you will own the standards, priorities, outcomes, team development, vendor alignment, and measurable results.
What You Will Take On
- Bring the strategy and discipline to build an integrated, data-informed B2B and B2C inbound and outbound marketing and communications plan that strengthens brand visibility, stakeholder engagement, service adoption, and measurable statewide impact.
- Expand Colorado 811’s brand, voice, reach, and relevance across homeowners, excavators, utilities, municipalities, contractors, members, partners, policymakers, and communities.
- Lead campaigns from audience insight, positioning, message architecture, creative concepting, and content development through launch, optimization, measurement, and executive-ready reporting—bringing the judgment to know what matters, what to test, and how to improve results.
- Use strong storytelling, channel strategy, lifecycle marketing, automation, audience segmentation, and performance insights to grow digital, earned-media, event, community, partner, and educational reach.
- Promote Colorado’s best damage-prevention education and conferences as can’t-miss experiences—building buzz, growing attendance, attracting partners and sponsors, and extending their impact statewide.
- Own and advance the marketing technology stack—including HubSpot, analytics, dashboards, workflows, content operations, campaign measurement, automation, and responsible AI-enabled marketing and content tools—to create smarter audience journeys, AI-informed personalization, automated nurture paths, more relevant content, stronger segmentation, faster testing, clearer reporting, and measurable campaign performance.
- Guide product and service launches, membership lifecycle communications, sponsorships, registrations, adoption, and revenue or cost-recovery initiatives with clear value propositions, audience journeys, AI-informed personalization where appropriate, and measurable outcomes.
- Manage the department budget, vendors, agencies, priorities, quality standards, and performance while personally contributing to critical deliverables and remaining accountable for outcomes.
- Develop and coach a lean team into an aligned, accountable, creative, and high-performing marketing function.
You May Be a Great Fit If You
- Are a seasoned marketing and communications leader who still loves the craft—strategy, storytelling, messaging, marketing, and measurable results.
- Move confidently between brand strategy, campaign architecture, copywriting, creative direction, MarTech, AI-enabled content tools, automation, analytics, people leadership, events, communications, and hands-on execution.
- Have built brands, teams, systems, or functions—not simply maintained them.
- Bring a good sense of humor, roll-up-your-sleeves energy, and the ability to enjoy the messy middle of building something meaningful—then get even more energized when the results start showing up.
- Want less corporate theater and more practical collaboration, creative ownership, modern marketing experimentation, speed, and progress.
- Care about doing work that has a visible public benefit.
- Are energized by a mission-forward product and service portfolio and know how to prioritize without losing momentum.
- Use data, dashboards, marketing technology, automation, AI-enabled tools, and audience insight to make decisions, personalize responsibly, tell clearer stories, improve content, and drive better outcomes.
What You Bring
- 15+ years of progressively responsible marketing, communications, or related experience, including experience leading manager-level marketing staff and working in both inbound and outbound B2B and B2C environments.
- 8+ years of formal people-management experience, including leadership of multiple employees, manager-level marketing and communications staff, and creative professionals.
- A bachelor's degree in Marketing, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
- Advanced experience with HubSpot Marketing Hub or a comparable CRM and marketing-automation platform, including integrated campaigns, drip campaigns, audience segmentation, inbound and outbound workflows, AI-enabled content and personalization tools, analytics, events, vendors, data governance, lifecycle reporting, and cross-functional launches.
- Idea-rich, forward-thinking product and service marketing experience, with the practical judgment to turn strong concepts into go-to-market success through sharp positioning, compelling value propositions, coordinated launches, strong adoption, and measurable results.
- Conference/trade show, and education program marketing experience, with the ability to turn a date on the calendar into a can’t-miss experience that builds buzz, fills seats, engages sponsors and partners, and delivers measurable results.
- Demonstrated success as both a strategic leader and hands-on player-coach contributor in a lean or resource-conscious team, with the judgment to prioritize high-impact work and lead through people, vendors, systems, and standards while remaining accountable for outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm using marketing and communications AI technologies, generative content tools, automation, analytics platforms, and campaign-measurement tools, with AI/content-tech work samples that show responsible use in areas such as copywriting, content production, AI-driven personalization, campaign measurement, workflow efficiency, testing, and performance improvement.
- Experience contributing as part of a senior leadership team and helping connect marketing priorities to broader organizational strategy, cross-functional decisions, resource alignment, risk awareness, culture, and companywide performance.
- Ability and willingness to travel statewide and work occasional evenings or weekends for conferences, events, and stakeholder meetings.
