Matter New York is looking for a Senior Editor to join our team producing print and digital content for national supermarket clients, including Hannaford Fresh and Savory magazines. This is a hands-on editorial role covering production editorial, front-of-book content, how-to and service journalism, and recipe-adjacent storytelling across multiple retail food brands.
You'll work closely with the Content Director on brand voice, client requirements, and editorial planning, while owning day-to-day drafting, editing, and production for assigned sections. This role requires someone who can write cleanly and quickly to a defined house style, hit deadlines in a fast-moving editorial calendar, and collaborate well with a small, close-knit team in New York and Amsterdam.
What you'll do
- Write and edit front-of-book content, how-to features, tips and hacks sections, and service-oriented copy for print magazines and digital platforms
- Work within established brand voice and style guides for multiple retail clients
- Collaborate with the editorial team during brainstorm and planning sessions to develop story ideas and section content
- Manage production editorial timelines, ensuring copy is delivered accurately and on schedule
- Coordinate with photo, design, and production teams to ensure visual direction
- Support recipe development and food-related feature content as needed
- Participate in client-facing brainstorm calls and incorporate client and brand feedback into revisions
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of editorial experience, ideally in food, lifestyle, or retail/branded content
- Strong, clean writing and editing skills with the ability to match an established house voice
- Comfort working across multiple clients/brands with distinct tones and requirements
- Reliable under deadline pressure in a recurring editorial cycle (bi-monthly/monthly issue cadence)
- Collaborative, team-oriented approach; open to feedback and able to work well within a small team
- Experience with production editorial workflows a plus
- Comfortable working in Adobe InDesign for reviewing and editing copy in layout (no design work required, just editorial fluency in the file)
- Experience with Asana and Workfront or similar project management/workflow tools a plus
- Food industry, nutrition, or recipe development experience a major plus
Location / Work Arrangement: Hybrid — must be able to come into our NYC office as needed
Employment Type: Full-time
Salary Range: $75,000–$80,000
