Nonprofit social justice publisher, Hesperian Health Guides, seeks an outgoing, highly organized Communications and Outreach Associate with excellent writing and storytelling skills, familiarity with social media, and demonstrated interest in public health or global health.
The Communications and Outreach Associate writes and edits integrated marketing communications with a social justice perspective and cultivates relationships with partners, donors, volunteers, and book buyers around the world.
Essential responsibilities:
Communication and Content Delivery – 50%
- Write and schedule engaging external communications including a weekly newsletter and regularly scheduled social media posts
- Prepare promotional materials and presentations for conferences
- Maintain and update web copy including e-commerce product descriptions and landing pages
Outreach and Partnerships – 35%
- Research, evaluation, and outreach for sales, partnerships, and media
- Coordinate collaborative campaigns including facilitating localization with international outreach team
- Facilitate quarterly virtual events and support occasional in-person events
Gathering and Analyzing Data – 10%
- Interview partners, staff, volunteers, and others to support organizational storytelling
- Monitor external channels including listservs, social media, and press alerts
- Clean and analyze data to support regular reporting
Administrative tasks - 5%
- Monitor shared inbox and route to appropriate staff
- Update records for project management
Minimum Qualifications:
- Writing experience: Demonstrated ability to tailor written content to multiple channels and audiences. Experience coordinating content production in editorial workflows with multiple reviewers and deadlines.
- Demonstrated interest in public health and/or global health through participation in campaigns, academic study, volunteer work, etc.
- Educational Background: A degree in Public Health, Journalism, Communications, English, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Skills and Abilities:
- Project and Task Management: Ability to manage multiple projects at once, track deliverables, and maintain high attention to detail across systems.
- Collaboration and Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues, volunteers, and people from different cultural backgrounds.
- Relationship-building and Follow-up: Comfortable making sales calls, presenting virtually or in-person, and following up regularly with potential partners.
- Editorial and Data Hygiene: Skill in proofreading and factchecking to ensure content and data is clear, accurate, and adheres to guidelines.
- Technical and Problem-Solving: Ability and willingness to learn, investigate, and troubleshoot new systems, tools, software, and workflows.
- Continuous Learning: Interest in learning and sharing knowledge, and ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
Helpful to Have:
- Video editing skills or familiarity with creating short format video/reels
- Secondary language skills, especially fluency in Spanish. Conversational or better French, Portuguese, Swahili, or other African languages is also desirable.

Location: Oakland, CA. Hybrid in Hesperian’s child-friendly, scent-free office with flexibility for up to 2 days remote.
