BikeLoud PDX is a Portland, Oregon non-profit with a mission to empower residents of Portland to reclaim their streets as a safe and dignified bicycle transportation network that is accessible to all, regardless of race, gender, income, or physical abilities.
Currently BikeLoud holds monthly board meetings, bi-monthly membership meetings, and publishes a monthly newsletter. During the spring and summer, BikeLoud typically hosts two outreach tables a month, as well as one or more informational bike policy/fun rides. Bike Loud responds to bike traffic fatalities and bike policy decisions with community gatherings and letters. Ongoing programs include the Bike Buddy paper mentorship program for new and returning bike riders, coordinating with various Bike Bus school programs, testifying at City Council meetings, and bike lane sweeping. All of these programs have dedicated volunteers, and the Bike Buddy program has a paid program manager.
BikeLoud is taking over from BikePortland the job of organizing and hosting the weekly “Bike Happy Hour” events.
BikeLoud seeks to hire an Operations Manager in a half-time contractor position. Much of the work can be done remotely but some activities, such as tabling, require attendance at various locations throughout Portland.
The operations manager responsibilities will include:
- Ensuring consistency in organization operations, such as:
- Scheduling and finding locations for our general meetings
- Ensuring timely distribution of our monthly newsletters
- Ensuring our website and social media are up-to-date
- Coordinating and/or running tabling events, including transporting tabling equipment to and from community events and staffing the table throughout the events, using volunteers when available. Transportation may be via bike with trailer, cargo bike, or BikeLoud’s truck.
- Planning bike rides
- Responding to or forwarding BL emails
- Building partnerships with other organizations that have compatible aims
- Organizing and hosting Bike Happy Hour for 4-6 hours one evening per week, year-round
- Recruiting, coordinating, and motivating volunteers to run BikeLoud activities
- Keeping abreast of jobs that need to get done, recruiting volunteers, and keeping track of upcoming events
- Growing & activating BikeLoud's membership (over 700 on our active Slack channel. 2500 newsletter subscribers)
- Organizing volunteers to regularly testify at city council (through our “Squeaky Wheel” program)
- Defining and delegating tasks to board members and volunteers
- Creating an organizational structure to accommodate a revolving door of board members and volunteers
- Making suggestions to help with branding and marketing BikeLoud
- Organizing, coordinating, & managing the use of physical assets, such as sweepers, truck, storage space, tabling materials
- Reporting the organization’s lobbying time report to the city of Portland
- Tracking and reporting metrics (such as volunteer hours) needed for grant writing
The Operations Manager will be supervised by a 2 to 4 person committee of the BikeLoud board, with one individual designated as day-to-day contact. The manager will meet with this committee regularly to discuss activities and plans, and will present their work at the monthly BikeLoud board meeting. The committee will write an annual evaluation of the Operations Manager’s work.
The Operations Manager position is open to any Portland bicycle rider, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, or religion. The contract rate is $50/hour for up to 20 hours per week. As a contract position, all taxes, health insurance, liability insurance, and workers’ compensation insurance must be paid by the contractor.
Qualifications
Required
The successful candidate should:
- Be someone who bicycles regularly for transportation
- Have experience motivating and organizing volunteers to get things done, such as staffing outreach tables, letter writing, testifying, mailings, newsletters, and speaking at meetings. The BikeLoud board and other volunteers will continue to perform these activities, while the Operations Manager will recruit folks to perform them and track that they get done.
- Have excellent organizational and record-keeping skills to help BikeLoud manage multiple activities that are planned and conducted simultaneously.
- Have excellent personal relationship abilities in order to interact with volunteers of multiple backgrounds and interests.
- Be self-motivated, with the ability to operate independently with minimal direction.
- Demonstrate the ability to maintain their consistent attention to the details of multiple simultaneous activities.
Preferred
- Familiarity with the local Portland biking “scene”, including agencies, organizations and other non-profits in the biking or adjacent fields.
- Experience with non-profit management
- Demonstrated marketing and communications skills
- Familiarity with common computer applications such as Google Drive and Google Docs
- Familiarity with MailChimp, and Customer Relationship Management software
- Speaking clearly and effectively to groups of people
- Be able to drive a box truck using a regular driver’s license
