Position Overview
The Director of Communications is Black Onyx Management's primary communications leader responsible for driving brand visibility, community engagement, and digital growth in support of the firm's mission to empower underserved communities. This is an execution-focused role that translates the firm's story into compelling content, strategic outreach, and meaningful community relationships.
This position plays a central role in the firm's continued growth by managing social media, directing community engagement efforts, supporting business development, and ensuring consistent internal and external messaging. The Director of Communications reports directly to the CEO and COO and collaborates cross-functionally with service line leaders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Community Engagement and Outreach (35%)
- Serve as the firm's primary liaison for community partnerships, civic organizations, and stakeholder relationships
- Represent Black Onyx Management at town halls, award banquets, community forums, and industry events — including evenings and weekends as needed
- Develop and execute outreach strategies that amplify underserved community voices in alignment with the firm's mission
- Build and maintain relationships with community organizations, media contacts, advocacy groups, and civic leaders
- Support outreach for key strategic initiatives including national market expansion in California and Washington, D.C.
2. Social Media and Digital Content Management (25%)
- Own and manage all social media platforms including LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and X
- Develop and maintain a content calendar that supports brand visibility, audience engagement, and consistent messaging
- Create and publish digital content including graphics, short-form video, newsletters, and email campaigns
- Monitor platform analytics and optimize content strategies to achieve 10%+ quarterly growth per platform
- Manage the firm's website content, ensuring accuracy, freshness, and alignment with brand standards
3. Media Relations and Brand Visibility (20%)
- Pitch stories, op-eds, and media opportunities to national, regional, and sector-specific outlets
- Develop press releases, talking points, and media kits for key organizational announcements
- Support thought leadership content and placement for firm executives
- Coordinate and track earned media placements with a target of 6+ per year
- Lead communications for strategic launches including BOM subsidiaries
4. Business Development Support (10%)
- Translate program outcomes and case studies into compelling client acquisition content
- Support RFP messaging, pitch materials, and narrative development for prospective clients, especially in for-profit segments
- Assist leadership in brand positioning efforts that contribute to the firm's revenue pipeline
5. Internal Communications (10%)
- Draft and distribute internal updates, policy announcements, and staff communications
- Collaborate with HR and leadership to communicate organizational priorities and performance expectations
- Maintain consistent cultural messaging aligned with the firm's strategic roadmap and values
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Public Affairs, or a related field
- 3–5 years of experience in communications, media, public relations, or a closely related field
- Exceptional storytelling, writing, and content creation skills across platforms and audiences
- Proficiency in social media management tools, scheduling platforms, and digital analytics
- Proven experience with community outreach and relationship-building across diverse populations
- Self-starter with strong project management ability in a lean, fast-paced environment
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered work
- Willingness to attend evening and weekend community events as required
Preferred:
- Background in journalism, broadcast media, or news production
- Existing relationships with regional and national media contacts
- Experience with CRM systems, email marketing platforms, and newsletter tools
- Familiarity with nonprofit, government, or civic sector communications
Compensation
$65,000 – $75,000 annually, commensurate with experience and scope of responsibilities for Senior Communications Manager role
$85,000 - $95,000 annually, commensurate with experience and scope of responsibilities for Director of Communications role
