The Marketing and Communications team champions two core missions: telling the story of the Department of City Planning and amplifying the voices of Atlanta’s neighborhoods and residents. To achieve these missions, this role executes and coordinates daily operations across our key focus areas: Communications and Engagement, digital media, and public outreach.
Secondarily, the group is responsible for internal strategic communications and engagement that support the successful delivery of marketing and communication services to the Commissioner of City Planning and the offices within the Department of City Planning.
Responsibilities
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Showcase the impact of DCP work using data and effective graphic design.
- Campaign Execution: Implement marketing campaigns promoting city design initiatives.
- Content Creation: Develop compelling written content including articles, newsletters, talking points, speeches, media materials, website content, and digital communications that translate complex planning concepts into clear, resident-focused messaging.
- Community Engagement: Coordinate public outreach events and community meetings.
- Brand Assets: Develop flyers, brochures, and digital graphics for presentations.
- Performance Tracking: Monitor and report engagement metrics across digital platforms.
- Team Collaboration: Support stakeholder communications and logistics for inter- and intra-departmental efforts.
- Support public engagement initiatives by developing communications materials, coordinating outreach efforts, and assisting with stakeholder engagement activities.
- Create stakeholder-focused communication and engagement that is understandable to all Atlantans and encourages active engagement in DCP work.
- Knowledge of community development issues and experience working in diverse communities.
- Coordinate integrated communications campaigns involving multiple departments, projects, and stakeholder groups.
- Media Relations: Assist with media inquiries, including drafting responses, coordinating interviews, preparing briefing materials, and supporting public information efforts.
INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS
- Understand interdepartmental structure, roles, and responsibilities to build strategic alliances and projects when possible.
- Build and maintain honest working relationships through the provision of accurate and timely information.
- Determine and use the right channels of communication to ensure the method of communication is appropriate.
- Provide opportunities for internal client groups to ask questions and seek clarification.
- Attend meetings and represent the MarComm team as may reasonably be required.
Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities
- Media Monitoring & Analysis: Track and analyze local news coverage, industry publications, and social media mentions of city planning initiatives to gauge public sentiment and brief department leadership on emerging trends or potential PR issues.
- Manage project timelines and detailed task lists for people-related projects, ensuring deliverables are on time and on target.

Qualifications
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, or public relations.
- Experience: 3–5 years of professional communications, public relations, public affairs, marketing, public engagement, or related experience required.
- Writing: Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills across digital, print, executive, and public-facing communications platforms.
- Management: Experience managing content calendars and social media channels.
- Public Sector: Prior experience working within local government is preferred.
Preferred Qualifications - Education And Experience
- Education: Master’s degree in marketing, public administration, or a related field.
- Direct experience in communications and community affairs or community engagement.
- Experience: 5-7 years of progressive project management, including 3 years of community engagement-related activities.
SOFTWARE PROFICIENCIES:
- Design & Layout: Hands-on experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign) and Canva.
- Email Marketing: Proficient with Mailchimp or Constant Contact for newsletter assembly.
- Social Media: Competence using Hootsuite, Sprout Social, or native Meta Business Suite tools.
- Collaboration & Productivity: Professional knowledge of Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Monday.com or other project management proficiency is a plus.
- Analytics: Ability to pull and interpret metrics using Google, Meta, and web Analytics.
