Job Description
The Assistant Editor will hold a variety of responsibilities across Sports Business Journal’s digital products.
Experience managing editorial projects/products, strong news judgment and an ability to work under tight deadlines are required. We are looking for someone who enjoys and appreciates aggregation and has a strong interest in sports business, media and entertainment.
This person will be responsible for helping search sites, highlighting stories, aggregation, budgeting and line-editing stories for digital editions. This person also will assist in writing captions, collating social posts and building the SBJ homepage as needed.
This person will communicate with Senior Assistant Editors and the social team on when stories are available for inclusion on the home page and promotion via SBJ social channels.
Job Responsibilities
- Edit copy in all publications, ensuring that stories are well written and adequately sourced and/or documented. Will be looking for style, clarity, spelling, grammar, consistency, context and accuracy.
- Write headlines, subheads, captions and other informational or graphics copy. As with all copy, Sports Business Journal’s goal is 100% accuracy.
- Assist in posting podcasts and other audio/video/social elements.
- Attend and participate in editorial staff meetings.
- Work with editors, reporters and researchers to plan new content and features.
- Oversee original digital features as assigned, as well as any other original stories for digital distribution.
- Take on any other assignment made by manager(s).
Required Skills
- Min. of 1-2 years experience in a newsroom setting
- Ability to absorb substantial amounts of incoming information is critical.
- Capability to work well under tight deadlines.
- Organize stories in most effective formats.
- Experience with management of editorial projects.
- Strong organization and communication skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to relate comfortably to a wide range of people, in person, on the phone and online.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- General office environment. Extensive computer use required. Ability to work flexible work schedules, including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed.
