About the organization: Compass Family Services is a 100+ year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.
Compensation: $34 - $37 hourly
Schedule: Full time, primarily Monday - Friday during standard business hours

Position Overview: The Communications Associate is responsible for communicating the agency’s mission and work to all constituencies, with the support of the Director of Communications. This is a hands-on position requiring a positive attitude, excellent organizational and communication skills, clear understanding of relationship building and branding, the ability to work in a collaborative team environment, the talent to create compelling and appropriate design solutions, and the discipline to execute multiple projects simultaneously.
Specific Responsibilities Include
Content Creation & Storytelling
- Draft and produce written and visual content across formats, including blogs, emails, social media, newsletters, flyers, postcards, invitations, signage, presentations, and reports, that reflect Compass Family Services’ voice and values.
- Take, select, and edit photographs for use across communications channels, maintaining organized photo libraries.
- Compile and distribute the monthly client newsletter in collaboration with program staff.
- Assist in identifying opportunities to improve language accessibility across communications materials and platforms.
Digital Communications Maintenance
- Maintain and update Compass’ primary communications channels, including the website, email platform, and social media accounts, ensuring content is accurate, current, and aligned with the organization’s voice and values.
- Maintain the communications calendar, ensuring deadlines and key dates are tracked and shared with relevant team members.
- Assist with the management of the Google Ads account, including monitoring performance and implementing updates as directed.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders across teams to gather content, ensure alignment, and support timely dissemination of communications.
Analytics & Reporting
- Track and compile web and social media analytics, providing regular reports and insights to inform ongoing communications efforts.
Brand Management
- Apply Compass Family Services’ brand guidelines consistently across all materials and platforms, ensuring visual and messaging consistency.
- Support the organization and distribution of brand assets, including photos, logos, and templates, for internal teams and external partners.
Media Relations
- Support media relations efforts by maintaining media lists, tracking coverage, and assisting with coordination of media inquiries and interview logistics.
- Help identify and track opportunities for external visibility, including events, panels, and community engagements for Compass leadership.
Social Media
- Execute day-to-day social media management, including scheduling and publishing posts across platforms, maintaining a social media content calendar, and creating engaging, platform-appropriate social media content.
- Engage with Compass’ online community by responding to comments, liking posts, and amplifying relevant content.
- Monitor and report on social media performance metrics and trends.
Qualifications
- One to two years of work experience in Digital Media, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
- Exceptional writing and grammar skills with the ability to write clearly and persuasively.
- An eye for design and experience creating branded collateral (flyers, reports, social media graphics, etc.).
- Experience with Wix, Salesforce, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, Meltwater, Hootsuite, Google Analytics, Google Ads, and SEO preferred.
- Experience creating professional social media and web content preferred.
- Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing homeless and low-income families and passion for supporting families to achieve stability.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
Location details:
- Fully in-person for the first three months. Afterward, eligible for up to one remote day per week with manager approval, subject to team needs and excluding short weeks and peak periods.
Compensation And Benefits
- Salary: $34 - $37 hourly, equivalent to $66-72k annually based on a 37.5 hour work week
- Paid time off: 4 weeks of vacation your first year, 5 in your second. Also paid holidays, sick time, family leave.
- Insurance: health, dental and vision insurance are fully covered by Compass for employees and dependent children. We also provide long term disability and life insurance.
- Retirement: after one year of work, Compass contributes an amount equal to 5% of your salary into a retirement account; this vests during years 2-6.
- Membership in OPEIU/Local 29 union.
