South Jersey General Assignment Reporter, Inquirer Regional
The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring two general assignment reporters to cover South Jersey and play a central role as we grow our coverage in the region. We’re looking for well-rounded reporters who excel at breaking news and enterprise reporting, and are committed to understanding and responding to community news and information needs.
You’ll cover suburban stories across South Jersey, with a special focus on Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties. We want applicants who excel at sourcing, are equally nimble writing news and features, and are open-minded about new story forms and aggregation. We’re looking for reporters who know how to listen closely, build trust, and tell us what people are talking about — day in and day out.
The reporters will join a new Inquirer team, including a daily South Jersey newsletter editor, and will work closely with other beat reporters covering South Jersey on our politics, education, and features teams. You’ll work at a fast pace, turning around a mix of daily and weekly stories, while helping to support our new daily morning newsletter. This is a hybrid position based in Greater Philadelphia.
What You’ll Do
- Report on breaking news across South Jersey, collaborating with other reporters when needed.
- Develop a network of sources in Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties, and routinely cover news and features from those communities.
- Identify what South Jersey residents are talking about across social media platforms and bring those conversations to our readers.
- Write news stories that affect South Jersey, with an eye on how to move that story forward.
- Contribute to live coverage during breaking news and major events in South Jersey, and help pioneer new ways of bringing those moments to our audience.
- Work with a cross-functional team experimenting with new story formats, newsletters, and alerts.
- Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment
Who We’re Looking For
- Early and mid-career reporters with the ability to cover a range of topics and generate creative story ideas.
- A reporter who values and is committed to community coverage, and engages in dialogue with local readers to understand and meet their needs.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for on-the-ground reporting. We’re seeking candidates who want to get out there. You must have a driver’s license and the willingness to travel across the region by car.
- Familiarity with South Jersey is preferred, but not a prerequisite.
