The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring a journalist to write and curate a new five-day-a-week South Jersey morning newsletter and play a central role as we grow our coverage in the region. We’re looking for a highly organized and efficient curator and writer, with a fluid and approachable writing style and a commitment to understanding and responding to community news and information needs.
This editor will be part of launching our newsletter, with a focus on Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties. You’ll curate locally relevant items from broader Inquirer coverage and aggregate other news and information sources. And you’ll work with a cross-functional team to improve this product, soliciting user feedback and paying close attention to audience analytics.
The Suburban Newsletter Editor will join the new Inquirer South Jersey team, which will include two GA reporters and will work closely with other beat reporters covering South Jersey on our politics, education, and features teams. This position is based in Greater Philadelphia and will be a hybrid role, with the opportunity to work many shifts from home. The morning newsletter editor will work Sunday through Thursday, 12 to 8 p.m.
The ideal candidate will have 3-plus years of experience working in digital media. Prior experience working specifically with newsletters, email, and mobile notifications is a big plus, but not necessarily a requirement. Experience working in social media, curation and other audience development roles is also applicable to this position, as is prior reporting and editing experience.
What You’ll Do
- Create and curate a daily South Jersey newsletter, primarily focused on Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester Counties.
- Develop a system for efficiently collecting news and information from communities across South Jersey, including civics and school news, real estate updates, local food, and more. Sometimes, our GA reporters will pick up these stories. Other times, you’ll simply aggregate them for your newsletter.
- Using aggregation and limited reporting, write news stories and brief items for the newsletter as needed.
- Work with a cross-functional team developing experimental local newsletter and alert products.
- Constantly iterate and improve upon the newsletters, guided by a combination of user feedback and newsletter analytics.
- Act as an occasional backup writer for hyperlocal weekly newsletters in some Pa. and Jersey suburbs.
- Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment
Who We’re Looking For
- A highly organized and systematic editor who is comfortable working within and helping to develop workflows that enable efficient creation of the daily newsletter.
- Strong writing skills are crucial for this role, as is the ability to quickly distill the most important elements of stories and write concise, accurate, and clean copy around them.
- Familiarity with digital publishing tools, content management systems, and email service providers are a recurring part of this job.
- The ability to understand data, trends and key performance indicators and use that information to inform your work.
- A collaborative journalist who can work closely with our flagship newsletter editor to share story ideas, reporting, and insights when our coverage overlaps.
- A curiosity for how people consume information and a desire to contribute to building features that encourage people to form a habit of engaging with our journalism
