The Philadelphia Inquirer is hiring a deputy editor for the News Desk’s Regional & Local teams, two separate units focused on expansion into South Jersey and hyperlocal coverage primarily in our Pa. suburbs. This editor will oversee our growing suite of newsletters and alerts, helping conceptualize and build an editorial identity for our email portfolio. They will also work closely with the Senior Editor to edit daily news coverage, steer the team’s reporters, and develop our editorial strategy.
The ideal candidate has strong editing skills, experience in both live coverage and newsletters, and a deep understanding of how to reach new and returning readers. This editor will carry the team through the late afternoon/early evening hours, working a 12-8 p.m. shift.
This role reports to the Senior Editor, Local & Regional. This position is based in Greater Philadelphia with a hybrid office schedule.
What You’ll Do
- Serve as the primary editor for our new daily South Jersey newsletter
- Work closely with our Local newsletter editors to develop and edit weekly hyperlocal newsletters and alerts
- Edit daily coverage out of South Jersey and the Pa. suburbs
- Help guide reporters through the fast-paced daily news cycle, helping them identify what suburban audiences are talking about on a daily basis
- Work with the team on developing unique story forms and innovative storytelling that will help our coverage stand out
- Work closely with the Senior Editor to develop and grow The Inquirer’s footprint in South Jersey and the Pa. suburbs
- Contribute to an inclusive and positive work environment
Who We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in a high-paced daily newsroom
- A highly organized, adept editor who can juggle several balls at once, including breaking news, daily deadlines, and a wide variety of stories and newsletter products
- Fluency with newsletter-led publishing and a clear understanding of how newsletters, on-platform stories, and alerts work together as a service to readers
- Significant experience editing a wide range of stories with strong judgment and high standards
- An abiding interest in and respect for how readers actually consume information and how to package journalism so it’s findable, understandable, and habit-forming
- Familiarity with South Jersey and/or the Pa. suburbs is a plus, but not required
