Reports To: VP, Digital Strategy and Audience Growth
Position Type: Full Time, Exempt
Salary Range: $57,000 to $61,000 Annually
About Your Role
The Audience Engagement Editor helps attract new digital audiences to our two stations — NPR member station 91.7 WVXU and classical music station 90.9 WGUC — while deepening relationships with the people who already know and love us.
Reporting to the VP of Digital Strategy and Audience Growth, this role sits at the intersection of content, audience and digital strategy. You’ll help our journalism, programming and events find the right audiences — and figure out how to get those audiences to click, listen, subscribe, attend and come back.
You are a person who can shift gears easily: one minute, you’re optimizing a breaking local news story for search; the next, you’re figuring out how to get classical music fans excited about an upcoming performance. You’re curious about what makes people pay attention, comfortable experimenting and energized by using data to make good decisions.
What You'll Do
Audience Engagement & Distribution
- Optimize content for discovery: Collaborate with assistant news director, reporters, hosts and other staff to improve headlines, URLs, meta descriptions and other elements that help people find and engage with our work through search and other digital platforms.
- Distribute in real time: Monitor breaking news and other timely content, quickly packaging and distributing stories across digital channels so important information reaches audiences when they need it.
- Lead daily social engagement: Manage scheduling, posting and audience conversations across social platforms, adapting content, voice and format for each audience and platform.
- Package content for different audiences and platforms: Find new angles, formats and ways into our journalism and national and local programming, including digital storytelling around WGUC’s classical music, artists, performances and events. You don’t need to be a classical music expert; you do need to be curious about how to make the music accessible and interesting to more people.
- Support station events: Develop digital approaches for station campaigns, concerts, community initiatives and third-party events that encourage listening, attendance and online engagement.
Audience Insights & Growth
- Track what matters: Monitor audience behavior and performance across websites, newsletters, social platforms, streaming and other digital channels, with a focus on reach, engagement, conversion, retention and growth.
- Turn data into action: Dig into audience performance to understand why people are responding — or not responding — and translate those insights into recommendations for content, distribution and audience growth.
- Experiment and learn: Test new approaches to headlines, social content, newsletters, calls to action, content packaging and distribution. Use the results to determine what to repeat, refine or leave behind.
- Help build digital fluency: Share what you’re learning and help colleagues become more comfortable using digital tools, platforms and audience data in their everyday work.
- You won’t be expected to set CPR’s overall audience strategy on your own. You’ll work closely with the VP of Digital Strategy and Audience Growth to turn broader goals into practical ideas, experiments and day-to-day decisions.
Fundraising & Audience Support
- Digital fundraising: Develop and execute audience-friendly digital content and experiences that support online giving, fund drives and other fundraising priorities.
- Audience conversion: Identify opportunities to turn audience engagement into deeper support, including membership, donations, events and listening.
- Campaign support: Partner with the fundraising, station and third-party teams on the digital components of major campaigns and fund drives.
You’ll Thrive If...
- You think like an audience member. You instinctively think about where people are, what they’re doing there and what will make them stop scrolling, click, listen or come back.
- You love a good headline. You understand that writing for a website, Google, a newsletter and Instagram are different skills — and you enjoy figuring out the right approach for each.
- You like to experiment. You’re willing to try something new, see what happens and adjust based on what you learn.
- You’re a flexible collaborator. You can move comfortably among breaking news, social media, journalism and classical music — and you enjoy helping colleagues become more confident with digital.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: 3–5 years of experience in digital media, journalism, audience engagement, social media, public broadcasting or a related field, with demonstrated experience engaging and growing digital audiences.
- Exceptional writing and editing skills: You know how to adapt voice, tone and format for different audiences and platforms.
- SEO knowledge: Solid understanding of SEO best practices for digital publishers.
- Analytics experience: Comfortable working with web, social, newsletter or other digital audience data and turning performance information into useful insights.
- Digital fluency: Familiarity with content management systems, email platforms, social media platforms and web analytics tools.
- Strong organizational skills: Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-moving environment.
- Collaborative approach: Comfortable working across departments and partnering with people with different skills, priorities and levels of digital experience.
- Must be comfortable working the occasional evening and/or weekend.
Bonus Skills
- Experience creating or editing short-form video and social assets.
- Familiarity with Canva or similar design tools.
- Basic experience with audio editing software such as Audacity or Adobe Audition.
- Experience with digital fundraising, membership or audience conversion.
